Saturday 19th October – bike **** Bages etang to Peyraic de Mer to Bages to Port La Nautique – Cloudy/windy (se) then walk ***

We woke up to very grey and gloomy skies but after breakfast set out on a great bike ride:) We started off on familiar paths around the etang and into Peyraic de Mer via the port where two men were emptying eels they had caught into tanks still alive! We cycled round to where we have parked on lots of occasions and …… they have put great big rocks across both entrances so that’s another one to cross off our list! We knew we shouldn’t park there but had got away with it lots of times:) Carried on round the Peyraic etang on the board walk (lots of flamingos:)) and into the village for bread and treated ourselves to a pain au raisin for later and two macaroons to try as we have never tried them before – one citron and one pistachio. We had noticed a cycle track from Peyraic to Bages when we were driving round the other day so set out on that and it was brilliant – took you on lots of terrain, past hunters on a ridge complete with rifles! and into Bages village. The road winds up in a spiral through the village to the church at the top. You have to go through a really old archway and the houses are really old and close together. We walked our bikes up through the narrow streets and sat and had our lunch at the viewing point next to the church. You can see right across the etang to Narbonne and La Nautique and if it is a clear day probably to Gruissan too. It was a really lovely place for lunch and to try our macaroons – nice but not as wonderful as we expected. We watched some windsurfers come out of Nautique as the south east wind had really picked up since we left the van but we were committed to the bike ride. We then biked round to Nautique which is a considerable way further on! We went on tracks and roads and through an arboretum on the way there and round the etang edge on the way back. It was a great bike ride and we were out about 4 hours and did about 20 miles. Some kitesurfers had set up just round from where we are parked and a fisherman was in the same spot as us. I walked back to talk to the kitesurfers and walked along the etang with my wind meter but still wasn’t tempted enough as it was getting late in the afternoon and the fisherman was in the way really. Still it is nice to know that I can launch from here another time instead of having to go round to Nautique. There is so much water around here to explore! Sat and read and dozed and ate our cakes. Then we got twitchy again and set out for a short walk to the corner looking back across the etang and saw an intriguing track up into the hills so followed that and ended up having a great walk around the hills and vineyards surrounding Peyraic. We were out an hour so probably around 3 miles because we were walking fast so we could still see the way back as it was very nearly dark! Saw a snake on the path:)
